DYSLEXIA THERAPY WITH LAURA MURPHY
My name is Laura Murphy, and I am passionate about working with dyslexic students. I received my master's degree in dyslexia therapy from Mississippi College, and I am also a licensed academic language therapist (CALT).
Before getting my master's, I taught first grade for 4 years. Each year I taught I saw students who were very bright, motivated, and intelligent who still struggled with reading. Despite interventions, these students didn't make any significant progress. That left me, as their teacher, feeling helpless and bewildered. I knew I had to learn how to help these students.
My dyslexia training was extensive, including 2 years of coursework and 820 clinical hours. I also worked at the TK Martin center at Mississippi State where I was trained in the Barton program which is what I primarily use.
I have learned that students with dyslexia are very smart, but that they just need to learn differently. The therapy I provide gives students practical strategies for reading, writing, and spelling, as well as providing a safe and encouraging environment. Seeing students succeed in areas where, previously, they have only known hardship is such a blessing. I normally see students at their schools, but I also offer virtual sessions as well. I would be honored to assist you and your family.
WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?
"Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”
This is the definition adopted by the International Dyslexia Association board.
Characteristics of dyslexia include:
Difficulty learning letter names and shapes
Difficulty learning to write the alphabet correctly in sequence
Difficulty in learning and remembering "sight" words or "high frequency" words
Reversals of letters ore sequences of letters
Repeated, erratic spelling errors
Difficulty "finding the right word" when speaking
Difficulty with directionality- learning left and right

ABOUT THE THERAPY

The Barton Program
While working at the TK Martin center, I was trained in the Barton program. This program was developed by Susan Barton. After receiving special training and spending many years working with dyslexic adults, she was hired at a for-profit clinic for dyslexic children. During this time, she learned many more Orton-Gillingham-based methods, several of the Lindamood-Bell systems, and became quite knowledgeable about Attention Deficit Disorder. She took the best parts of all the dyslexia programs she had been introduced to and created her own program.
The Barton program is:
Orton Gillingham influenced
Research and Evidence based
Intense intervention
Supports Common Core
Designed to be conducted in a one-on-one setting
multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured and sequential instruction
